Georgian Verge Bracket Clock
by Richard Laurence of Bath.
A well patinated fruitwood case with breakarch locking
doors at front and back, the front with gilt spandrels
glazed beside the arch. The clock sides have inspection
glasses with rounded top lights. The inverted bell top

pineapple corner finials. The clock is 18.5” high, 11.5”
wide, 7” deep. The silvered breakarch dial has Roman
hour and Arabic five minute numerals, the dial centre is
extravagantly engraved Richard Laurence – Bath. There

rack strike with repeat facility. The plates have five
turned pillars and the backplate has an intriguing
engraving of a lady with an ostentatious hat standing on
a stone bridge with surrounding floral and entre–lac
decoration*. Richard Laurence was born in Warminster in
1729 & died in 1773. He had a flourishing clock and
watch making business in Bath and was also part of the
lively social scene of those times. He became a Sheriff
in 1770. *There is speculation that the backplate
engraving was linked to a scandalous affair.
