A very fine quality 1720’s English 18th century George II
burr walnut longcase clock by William Barrow, London, the well proportioned
burr walnut case of good colour, the burr walnut long type trunk door with
bordering walnut banding, the caddy type hood with fret work to the front
surmounted by three gilt wood finials, the hood with full length hood
columns and polished brass capitals, the 8-day weight driven 4-pillar
movement with rack striking, the 12 inch brass dial with matted centre
engraved with birds, cherub and dolphin type spandrels, subsidiary seconds,
date box window and convex silvered name plate in the break arch, circa
1720, this clock has been in the same family until now and this maker has
three longcase clocks in the national museum of Stockholm. |

Mahogany longcase clock by Angel Sparke - Plymouth.An
imposing mahogany case, the trunk with full length fluted quarter pillars
with turned mahogany capitals and reeded brass inlays. The break arch
locking trunk door has superb flame mahogany veneer with dot and dash inlaid
surround. The plinth has a flame mahogany panel with moulded surround and
stands on bracket feet. The break arch hood also has fluted pillars, turned
mahogany pillar caps and reeded brass inlays. The concave top moulding
supports three turned mahogany finials. The locking hood door has dot and
dash inlays. The break arch 12 inch silvered dial has Roman hour numerals
and Arabic five minute markers. The dial is engraved with lotus flower
corners and floral swags. The arch is engraved with a hunting eagle holding
in it’s claws a Tempus Fugit banner. The blued steel hands are fretted and
pierced. There are recessed silvered seconds and date dials and the centre
has the maker’s name Angel Sparke – Plymouth. The eight day movement has
turned pillars, anchor escapement and rack strike sounding the hours on a
tenor bell. Angel Sparke is listed as a Plymouth watch and clockmaker
working from ca.1770 – 1790 in Market Street. He also looked after the St
Andrews church clock. He was referred to by a contemporary writer as “an
excellent maker of 8 day arched dial longcase clocks” Height 220cms. |

Trauffer, Davos, the German three train quarter striking Westminster chiming

within an elaborate carved Linden wood case with edelweiss flowers to the
front and a mountain goat to the base section, the top surmounted by his
unique carving of the wild man of Davos, originally kept for the last
90-years in the Trauffer shop in Davos as a furnishing and never for sale
until now, carved by Mr Trauffer, Davos, Mr Trauffer was an exceptionally
well recognised carver working with his brother around 1890-1940,s, A book
with his designs of various carvings is available including a picture of him
carving from his shop in Davos, he frequently put all his carvings outside

A fine Scottish clock in a mahogany case, the tapered trunk
with canted sides and applied acanthus leaf carvings also features
shouldered acorn finials above and below the tapered and cushioned locking
trunk door. The plinth has a fielded panel within a moulded frame and stands
on bun feet. The rounded hood has top hinged door with turned surround and
with acanthus and other floral carvings above and below. The door can be
locked shut using the wooden turncatch inside the trunk door. The giltwood
sight ring frames the 12" circular painted dial with Roman numerals and
subsidiary seconds and calendar dials. The dial is signed JOSEPH STROMIER,
GLASGOW. The hands are of spade design in blue steel. The 8 day movement has
rack strike sounding the hours on a bell.The anchor escapement is controlled
by a strap pendulum with a brass faced lead bob. JOSEPH STROMIER is recorded
as working in and around the Glasgow area circa 1865. |

A superb case with walnut veneers and marquetry on an oak
carcase. The full length locking door has floral marquetry depicting
acanthus leaves, carnations and tulips with a bird in the foliage. There is
a lenticle glass with pontil. The plinth has similar floral marquetry at the
front and stands on an apron skirting. The sides of the trunk and plinth are
panelled with boxwood stringing and arched tops. The flat topped hood slides
on a marquetry moulding and the marquetry is also on and above the door.
There are integral barley twist pillars and quarter pillars at the back.
There are side inspection glasses. The unusual 11.5” dial has a silvered
chapter ring with Roman hour numerals, the inner ring has quarter and half
hour gradations and the outer minute ring has Arabic five minute markers.
The dial centre is finely matted with ringed winding holes. The calendar
aperture is also ringed and has an engraved ‘tulip tree’ surround. The
silvered seconds dial also has a ringed hole for the hand. The chapter ring
is signed Jno. Masters Bristoll. The gilded angels and crown spandrels are
C&W no 8 (without sceptre) The fretted hands are blue steel. The eight day
movement has anchor escapement and an inside countwheel with an outside
locking arm. The strike sounds the hours on a bell. There are 5 turned and
ringed pillars. There is a brass faced pendulum bob with knurled rating nut.
There is a later Thorntons Patent keyholder inside the trunk. The height of
this clock is only 6’6”. John Masters was working in Bristol 1707 – 1739. |

A beautiful George I chinoiserie lacquered case with gilt
floral decoration on the sides. The locking break arch trunk door has well
delineated scenes of pavilions and of rural life, the plinth also has rural
scenes and stands on an apron skirting. The break arch hood is also
decorated, the sides have floral patterns with side inspection windows, the
door has integral pillars with geometric and floral patterns and giltwood
caps, there are also quarter pillars at the back. The 12" break arch dial
has silvered chapter ring with inner graduations for the Roman hours and
Fleur de Lys half hours, the outer graduations have Arabic 5 minute
numerals.The dial centre is matt with a silvered seconds ring and a calendar
aperture. The spandrels are C&W 21 pattern and are gilded. There is a
silvered plaque in the arch engraved Pere.Tawney London with wheat- ear
border supported by gilded dolphin spandrels. The blued steel hands are
fretted and pierced. The eight day movement has turned and ringed pillars
and an anchor escapement, there is a rack strike sounding the hours on a
temple bell. The brass cased weights are complemented by a brass strap
pendulum with an iron bob finely decorated with gilt and floral emblems. |

A superb case in figured walnut with marquetry front. The
full length locking trunk door has Dutch marquetry with inlays of satin
wood, box wood, snake wood aand other woods in an Ebony background depicting
tulips, carnations, ornate masques, a bowl of flowers with birds and
butterflies. The door has half round cross- cut beading round the edges and
has a lenticle glass with a brass bezel. The trunk surround is figured
walnut with ebony and box-wood stringing. The plinth has similar marquetry
and surround with crosscut walnut skirting. The hood has a flat top with
crosscut mouldings above a silk backed sound fret. The door has marquetry
surround with integral turned pillars with brass pillar caps and matching
quarter pillars at the back. The hood has side inspection windows and the
door can be bolted from within the trunk. The 11" gilded brass dial has
Tompion designed spandrels ( C & W no.5 ) with floral engraving between. The
silvered chapter ring has Rman hour numerals with inner quarter and half
hour marks and outer minute marks with Arabic 5 minute numerals. The makers
name Thos. Stubbs London is engraved astride the VI. The hands are fretted
blue steel. The plated movement has 5 turned and ringed pillars, anchor
escapement and an internal countwheel controlling the strike at each hour on
a delicate bell. Thomas Stubbs, London was free of the Clockmakers
Company (1685 - 1726. He was keeper of St. Pauls cathedral clock up to his
death in 1738. Height 6' 6"" |

It was then given to Mr Henry Taylor on his marriage 1878 as a present from his late partner Mr George Boydell from the office of Pepper Street.
