clock of a steam engine emerging from a tunnel, the case is constructed
of gilt, silvered and patinated bronze with rouge marble for the base
and top, the brickwork at the mouth of the tunnel is faithfully copied
as is the detail on the train itself, the case with individual bolt
heads are shown, the railway line, the buffers and the carriage hitching
hook, the dial is silvered with a gilt centre and has blued steel hands
and Arabic numerals, to each side of the dial are subsidiary dials for
temperature, the one on the left for Celsius and the one on the right
for Fahrenheit, the 8-day movement striking the hours and half hours on

A fabulous 18th
century French mantel antique clock in an ormolu and bronze case featuring the names
of Lepine and Javelot. The bronze figure of a putti is based on a
design by F. Boulez; here he is reclining against the antique clock and is holding a
stylus and a scroll engraved with a cartoon, he is seated on the ormolu
volumes of books with drapes, bows and swags surrounding the antique clock case. The
squared ormolu case has fluted sides and the top has a sundial and a square
and compasses and a celestial globe pivoted on a six armed stand. The
opening cast ormolu bezel has oval and twist decor. The convex enamel dial
has Roman hours and Arabic five minutes markings and is signed Lepine Place
de la Victoire No. 12. The gilded hands are finely pierced and fretted. The
back of the antique clock has a closefitting fluted door opening to reveal the drum
movement, the backplate is engraved JAVELOT PARIS, the countwheel has
engraved numerals and stroked the hours and half hours on a bell, there is
anchor escapement and Brocot suspension replacing the original silk
suspension. There is an intriguing marking on the back of the dial "A la

mercury gilding, the antique clock case is held behind a gilt support frame and
surmounted by satin gilt mount in the form of trailing foliage and ribbons,
the frame is supported by two gilt burnished arched frames resting on four
cylindrical supports sitting on a white carrera base with engine turned bun
feet, the rounded white enamel chapter ring with black Roman numerals, the
open dial centre reveals the motion work of the antique clock and the gilt hands are
pierced and chased, the eight day movement strikes on a bell and the
sunburst pendulum is silk suspended, circa 1795 |
