A fine Scottish clock in a mahogany case, the tapered trunk with canted
sides and applied acanthus leaf carvings also features shouldered acorn
finials above and below the tapered and cushioned locking trunk door.
The plinth has a fielded panel within a moulded frame and stands on bun
feet. The rounded hood has top hinged door with turned surround and with
acanthus and other floral carvings above and below. The door can be
locked shut using the wooden turncatch inside the trunk door. The
giltwood sight ring frames the 12" circular painted dial with Roman
numerals and subsidiary seconds and calendar dials. The dial is signed
JOSEPH STROMIER, GLASGOW. The hands are of spade design in blue steel.
The 8 day movement has rack strike sounding the hours on a bell.The
anchor escapement is controlled by a strap pendulum with a brass faced
lead bob. JOSEPH STROMIER is recorded as working in and around the
Glasgow area circa 1865.
