A superb case with walnut veneers and marquetry on an oak carcase. The
full length locking door has floral marquetry depicting acanthus leaves,
carnations and tulips with a bird in the foliage. There is a lenticle
glass with pontil. The plinth has similar floral marquetry at the front
and stands on an apron skirting. The sides of the trunk and plinth are
panelled with boxwood stringing and arched tops. The flat topped hood
slides on a marquetry moulding and the marquetry is also on and above
the door. There are integral barley twist pillars and quarter pillars at
the back. There are side inspection glasses. The unusual 11.5” dial has
a silvered chapter ring with Roman hour numerals, the inner ring has
quarter and half hour gradations and the outer minute ring has Arabic
five minute markers. The dial centre is finely matted with ringed
winding holes. The calendar aperture is also ringed and has an engraved
‘tulip tree’ surround. The silvered seconds dial also has a ringed hole
for the hand. The chapter ring is signed Jno. Masters Bristoll. The
gilded angels and crown spandrels are C&W no 8 (without sceptre) The
fretted hands are blue steel.
The eight day movement has anchor escapement and an inside countwheel
with an outside locking arm. The strike sounds the hours on a bell.
There are 5 turned and ringed pillars. There is a brass faced pendulum
bob with knurled rating nut. There is a later Thorntons Patent keyholder
inside the trunk. The height of this clock is only 6’6”. John Masters
was working in Bristol 1707 – 1739.
