Quarter repeating bracket clock by William Garfoot, Middle Temple, London. A
rare 17th century clock from the heart of the Inns of Court. The ebonised
case has locking front and back doors and side windows with a cushion top
and gilt brass Eagle & Dolphin carrying handle. The cushion top has silk
backed pierced repousse gilt decorative sound frets depicting animals and
birds hidden in foliage. There are four gilt brass corner finials and a
repousse escutcheon on the door. The clock stands on four cast gilt brass
claw feet. There is a silk repeat pull cord. The 7” gilt dial has a silvered
chapter ring with Roman hours, the inner ring with quarter and half hour
gradations. The outer minute ring has 5 minute Arabic markings. The ring is
signed Wm. Garfoot, Midel Temple. The dial centre ia finely matted and there
are beautifully cast Angel corner spandrels. The blue steel hands are finely
fretted and pierced. The single fusee movement has verge escapement and the
pull wind repeat mechanism sounds the quarters on two bells and the hours on
a single bell. There are five turned, ringed and latched pillars and the
back plate and the verge cock are finely engraved with a tulip design. The
movement has fixing screws under and the dial has half disc retainers.
William Garfoot worked in the Middle Temple and no doubt supplied the
Barristers with their clocks and watches. He was working prior to 1678 and
was Free of the Clockmakers Company 1680-1701. He was also noted as a maker
of verge watches.
