A second half of the 19th century lacquered brass Sir Walter Scott Memorial Skeleton timepiece by Evans of Handsworth sitting on a carrera white marble rectangular base mounted on an original cut brass inlayed rosewood plinth, attributed to William Frederick Evans of Handsworth, the typical spired frame with four buttresses and the cast figures of Sir Walter Scott and his dog and pierced silvered chapter ring with fancy roman numerals and trefoil hands, the single chain fusee movement with six spokes wheels and vertically mounted English type lever platform escapement with plain gilt three arm monometallic balance and Harrison type maintaining power, circa 1860, In 1850 Evans produced his famous skeleton clock which was based on the Scott Memorial. This was shown at the great exhibition 1851 and is now in the city museum and art gallery. The clock proved to be extremely popular and he started to produce them in limited numbers. Even though the original was a two train with balance wheel and had a relatively detailed frame and marble base, those that were produced after varied greatly, 15" x 9" x 6" |
